The Procedure

There are several surgical techniques for breast reduction, but the one most commonly used for breast reduction surgery involves an incision around the areola. The incision resembles the shape of a boat anchor with the bottom portion following the curve below the breast. Through the incision, your plastic surgeon at The Plastic Surgery Group in Albany, New York will remove the extra tissue, fat and skin that have caused your breasts to be too large. Your surgeon will also reposition the nipple and areola and will shape the breasts around them, giving your breasts a new contour. Sometimes, liposuction is used to eliminate extra fatty tissue from under the arms.

When the breasts are very large or hang extremely, both the nipples and areolas are usually taken off and repositioned through grafting. Sometimes the areola is recreated using a tattoo to resemble a natural areola.

Stitches will be placed following the anchor shape of the incision. Sometimes, the scar from the vertical incision can be made almost invisible. And in some cases when the large breasts are caused by an excessive amount of fat alone, liposuction can be used exclusively and the resulting scars are far less extensive and noticeable.

Recovering

After your breast reduction surgery you will experience some discomfort and some pain for the first few days to a week. This may be controlled by medications that your plastic surgeon at The Plastic Surgery Group will prescribe for you. You will also be wearing an elastic bandage and then a surgical bra over your bandages. For the first day or two following your surgery, you may have a drainage tube inserted to eliminate blood and fluids more effectively from the incision areas. When your bandages are removed after the first couple of days, you will need to continue to wear the surgical bra until your swelling and bruising subside. This usually occurs within several weeks. In most cases, stitches are removed within three weeks after surgery.

As you heal, you will continue to feel less and less discomfort. But you may feel achy for a few weeks following your surgery. During this time, you should not do any heavy lifting or strenuous pushing. Follow the directions of your plastic surgeon at The Plastic Surgery Group regarding returning to work, exercise and sexual activity. Remember that you will have less energy for a few weeks following your surgery and that you need to reduce your physical activity to help your body recover.

Potential Risks and Complications

After breast reduction surgery, some patients might experience a temporary infection, some bleeding or have a reaction to the type of anesthesia used during the operation. These conditions are rare and your Albany plastic surgeon at The Plastic Surgery Group will give you detailed instructions to follow to help avoid these.

Some patients may also notice small sores in the breast nipple area which can be treated with cream prescribed by your plastic surgeon.

Scarring is inevitable with breast reduction surgery, although your plastic surgeon will make every effort to conceal the scarring as much as possible. These scars will fade over time, however they will be permanent. It is very important to follow your plastic surgeon's directions pre- and post-operatively to promote optimum scar healing.

Because breast reduction surgery eliminates a good number of the ducts that produce breast milk, you may not be able to breast feed. You may also experience some loss of sensitivity in your breasts and the nipple area.
