It's a fact of life that aging around the eyes is inevitable. But through the cosmetic surgery techniques of eyelid surgery, these effects of aging can be greatly reduced, or virtually eliminated.

The Procedure
Eyelid surgery is a relatively straightforward type of procedure. Your plastic surgeon from The Plastic Surgery Group in Albany, New York will make a series of small incisions that will follow the shape of your lids around your eye. Within these, your plastic surgeon will lift the skin and eliminate fat deposits under it and tighten the muscle and skin to form the new, tighter contour of your eyelids.
In some cases, your plastic surgeon may perform what is known as transconjunctival eyelid surgery. This is often done in conjunction with laser resurfacing of the lower eyelids. This procedure does not involve the removal of any skin under your eye. Instead, the plastic surgeon makes small incisions on the inner part of your lower eyelid and removes the fat that has accumulated there. Because the incisions are made on the inside of your lower lid, there will be no visible scars after transconjunctival eyelid surgery.
In most cases, eyelid surgery takes a couple of hours and is usually as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia and calming relaxants. You may feel a little pressure during the procedure, but for the most part, you will be quite relaxed and comfortable.
Recovering
After your eyelid surgery, you may have a dressing over your eyes and some type of soothing ointment. You may experience some discomfort but that is usually not long lasting and can be controlled by a prescription your plastic surgeon can write.
There are some things your plastic surgeon at The Plastic Surgery Group in Albany, New York may tell you to do. These may include:
- Propping a pillow behind your head to support it upright to help reduce any swelling
- Using eye drops to soothe and moisten your eyelids
- Protecting your eyes from bright light and direct sun
- Placing cool washcloths on your eyes
After a few days or a week following your eyelid surgery your stitches will be taken out. You also will begin to notice an improvement in the way your eyes look. The benefits of having eyelid surgery will become more and more obvious to you over the next weeks and months. Keep in mind that everybody heals at a different rate. You'll visit your Albany plastic surgeon at The Plastic Surgery Group several times during your recuperation. Be sure to follow the directions he or she gives you closely to ensure optimum healing.
Potential Risks and Complications
There are very few risks associated with eyelid surgery and any complications are usually very minor. You may have some slight vision blurriness for a couple days following your surgery. This will correct itself. You may also feel some tightness when you close your eyes, but this will usually also go away in a short time. And there may be some puffiness at the corners of your eyes from the surgery, which will lessen as you continue to recuperate.
Your plastic surgeon at The Plastic Surgery Group, serving Schenectady, Saratoga and Albany, will discuss explain these possible conditions with you when you have your eyelid surgery consultation and during your follow-up visits after your eyelid surgery.

After your eyelid surgery, you won't b able to wear contact lens for a couple of weeks and maybe longer, and when you can wear them, they may not feel as comfortable to you until your eyelids complete the healing process.
