Body Contouring: Which Procedure Is Right for Me?

Learn about body contouring options, including tummy tuck, at our practice in Albany, NY

People love choices, but understanding how to choose the body contouring procedure that’s right for you can be a bit confusing. With the introduction of nonsurgical fat reduction procedures, there are now more options than ever.

Consider this a primer on those choices, including CoolSculpting®, liposuction, and tummy tuck surgery, which are all available at our Albany, NY practice.

Here’s a brief look at each procedure and how they can fulfill unique patient needs and cosmetic goals:

  • CoolSculpting: We’ve offered this breakthrough, noninvasive treatment since 2012 as a liposuction alternative, and its popularity among both men and women continues to increase. The fat-reducing procedure is ideal for patients who work out regularly and are in good overall health but have localized pockets of fat that won’t go away. These typically occur in trouble spots such as the tummy, back, or flanks. Good candidates’ skin retains most of its elasticity so it adapts to the body’s new contours after the treatment.
  • Liposuction: Patients who want more extensive fat reduction choose liposuction to get the desired results. Unlike CoolSculpting, which doesn’t involve any downtime, liposuction is an invasive procedure that requires a recovery period of a few days to a week. A surgeon inserts a small tube, called a cannula, through very small incisions and suctions fat from the body. Good skin elasticity is also needed for liposuction patients.
  • Tummy tuck: There are actually multiple tummy tuck variations, and choosing the right procedure depends on your aesthetic goals and your anatomy. In general, tummy tuck surgery creates a flatter abdomen by removing lax skin that is left behind after losing significant weight or pregnancy. For a full, or standard, tummy tuck, your surgeon makes a horizontal incision extending from hip to hip just above the pubic area. In most cases the incision is below the bikini line, which hides scars. Although this is the most invasive option, with a recovery lasting a few weeks, it is also the most thorough for those who want truly transformative results.

Combining a tummy tuck and liposuction is common to remove both fat and excess skin. These 2 procedures are also often part of an even larger operation called a mommy makeover, which also treats the breasts and is a good fit for women who are finished having children.
