The banner statistic from the latest plastic surgery survey compiled by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has come as a surprise to people across the country, who are leaving comments on news articles and Facebook posts such as “really?” and “why?”
As a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I understand the answers to these questions, and I wanted to provide some insight and hopefully remove some of the stigma attached to this buzz-worthy stat.
First of all, if you’re one of many asking “really?” the answer is most definitely “yes.” In 2014, there was an 86% increase in butt augmentation procedures reported by ASAPS members compared with 2013. That equals about 21,446 procedures.
As for the “why,” here are a few answers:
- A desire for a curvier or more proportioned figure. As demonstrated in a viral YouTube video from BuzzFeed, the ideal women’s body type continues to change. The video describes “postmodern beauty” as the combination of a flat stomach with large breasts and a large butt. This is in sharp contrast with past ideals, which range from the ultra-skinny preference among women in the 1960s to the athletic supermodel era of the 1980s. As plastic surgery becomes more accepted, women are seeking a look that’s described as “healthy skinny” and includes a shapely rear.
- Loose, sagging, or flat buttocks as a result of weight loss or aging. A rising number of women (and also some men) simply do not like the effect weight loss or aging can have on the buttocks. For some, weight training and exercise is sufficient to offset these effects. But others still struggle with their appearance. They seek butt augmentation, whether through fat injections or implants, to maintain a youthful shape and contour.
- Clothes or swimwear are baggy or do not fit properly. This may sound like a small concern, however clothes shopping can be very frustrating when one feature is wildly out of balance. Flat buttocks make it especially difficult to find jeans that actually fit in both the body and legs. Women have been using breast augmentation to correct this issue for many years. Butt augmentation may seem a little taboo only because it’s just now gaining in popularity.
