Judging by what we hear at our practice, a double chin is among the most annoying aesthetic concerns for many of our patients — both men and women. Why annoying? Because for many people, a double chin has nothing to do with weight gain. For some, it’s an inherited physical feature. In other cases, fat begins accumulating as they age.
In the past, the only effective treatment to reduce fat below the chin (called submental fat) was liposuction. Many patients, however, either didn’t want to undergo a surgical procedure or weren’t good candidates for liposuction.
Fortunately, in the past year the FDA has approved 2 nonsurgical procedures that reduce submental fat. Those treatments — KYBELLA® injections and the specialized CoolMini™ applicator designed for use with CoolSculpting® — are both available at our Albany, New York practice.
Which treatment is best for you? Here’s a look at each procedure:
The Treatment: The CoolMini applicator fits snugly under the chin thanks to its unique design. CoolSculpting chills fat cells to the point that they begin dying, without harming the skin or other tissues. This is a noninvasive procedure — no injections, no incisions. The procedure takes about an hour, and in many cases, 2 treatment sessions are needed to get the desired results.
The Results: Once the fat cells die, they’re gone for good. Because CoolSculpting triggers a natural metabolic process to remove those cells, it can take several weeks for the final results to show up.

The Cost: At the Plastic Surgery Group, the cost for CoolSculpting is $750 per area, with discounts available when multiple areas are treated. Body contouring with CoolSculpting uses applicators designed specifically for the targeted treatment area. Keep in mind that your final cost will depend on how many treatments are necessary to reach your goal.
The Treatment: KYBELLA is an injectable treatment that reduces submental fat using a substance that naturally occurs in the body called deoxycholic acid, which helps break down dietary fat. The number of injections made during a treatment session is customized based on your specific needs and the results you want. The injection sites are marked to ensure precision during your treatment, which usually takes somewhere between 15 to 30 minutes. Multiple treatment sessions, scheduled at least 30 days apart, are usually needed to get the optimal results.
The Results: As with the CoolMini, the results emerge gradually as fat cells die after treatment. Ultimately, most patients enjoy a contoured neck line with more definition in their profiles.

The Cost: At The Plastic Surgery Group, we charge $2,500 for KYBELLA, which includes 2 treatments spaced about 1 month apart. For further information, we’ve written about the cost of KYBELLA in an earlier blog post.
Those are the essential differences between the treatments. The best way to know which treatment is best for your budget and aesthetic goals is by scheduling a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.
