I sometimes will meet with a patient who is scheduled for a consultation to discuss a facelift. When the person arrives in Albany at our office, though, it turns out that another procedure is actually the best option. People sometimes use “facelift” as a catch-all phrase that includes any cosmetic surgery involving the face. Actually, though, there are distinct procedures that address specific areas, and they are all excellent anti-aging options.
Many patients believe that a facelift rejuvenates the whole face. That’s actually not true. Instead, a facelift combined with other procedures provides the overall changes that some patients are looking for.
A facelift addresses the middle and lower portions of the face and is an excellent procedure to restore volume to the cheeks, correct sagging jowls, and tighten loose skin on the cheeks, jawline, and neck. So what are the other facial procedures that help turn back the clock?
- Neck lift: The neck is often where the earliest signs of aging appear. Someone who’s not ready for a facelift may still benefit from a neck lift if he or she has loose, sagging, and wrinkled skin. For patients whose skin is in good condition, liposuction is an option to restore definition to the area below the chin and jawline.
- Eyelid surgery: Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, lifts sagging or puffy lower and upper eyelids that give people a tired and older appearance.
- Brow lift: A sagging brow, or forehead, creates the appearance of anger, worry, or tiredness. A brow lift can return this area to a more youthful position.
Each of these procedures can be combined with one or more of the others to get results tailored to an individual’s needs. An experienced facial plastic surgeon can recommend which procedure or combination of procedures is best for specific patients.
