Facelift: Take a Look at the Pros and Cons

Mature woman

Making a well-informed decision often means weighing the benefits of one choice with the downside of another. The same goes for many of our patients, who come from Syracuse or Saratoga Springs, only to arrive at their facial plastic surgery consultation still undecided about getting a facelift.

And that’s OK. Surgery is not a decision you should make lightly. In fact, sometimes a facelift isn’t the best option for addressing a patient’s concerns. There are plenty of surgical and nonsurgical procedures that may be a better approach. But even for women and men who can benefit from a facelift, there is still the decision about whether to commit to having plastic surgery.

It’s helpful to consider both sides of what you’re getting yourself into.

  • Pro: A single surgery, multiple areas improved. A facelift addresses wrinkles, creases, and sagging skin in the lower two-thirds of the face, including jowls and cheeks. It’s not a comprehensive facial rejuvenation on its own (in the sense that a facelift won’t affect the eyes or brow), but plastic surgeons can also add other procedures such as eyelid surgery or a neck lift to get the optimal results in 1 operation.
  • Con: Downtime. Any kind of surgery involves a recovery process. You need time to heal, which includes resting and caring for incisions. It often takes 2 weeks or more before patients are ready to return to work, depending on how fast they recover and how private they want to keep the surgery.
  • Pro: The results. A facelift can boost your self-confidence. That’s what happens when you look about 10 years younger, without looking like you had “work” done. It can be especially uplifting for patients who felt that wrinkles and loose skin made them appear much older and more tired than they actually felt. • Con: You may want a second procedure later in life. Patients in their 40s or 50s when they undergo a facelift may decide to have a follow-up surgery performed to maintain their results. You will always look younger than your real age, but aging will continue to progress after your procedure. That subject is something plastic surgeons often discuss with younger facelift patients during the consultation.

When you take a look at the pros and cons, it becomes clearer that the benefits seem much greater than the downsides. If you’re concerned about looking older than you feel, a facelift procedure with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon is the most effective way of erasing years from your appearance.

It’s also a great time to schedule a facelift at our practice. Spa One is offering a 20% discount on their products for cosmetic surgery patients who book a procedure by the end of the year. The special deal is limited to 1 per customer, and it applies to patients who undergo a surgical procedure valued at $3,000 or more.
