If you keep up with pop culture, then you are likely familiar with the recent controversy surrounding a member of the Kardashian/Jenner family who is taking center stage over her changing appearance.
Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kylie Jenner recently made headlines and plenty of social media hashtags as the world became fixated on her plump and perfectly made-up pout. As questions swirled over whether the 17-year-old had received lip injections, Jenner first seemed to hint that makeup, and not fillers, was responsible.
All that attention lead to the so-called “Kylie Jenner Challenge,” a viral social media fad in which young people used vacuum suction from cups and shot glasses in an effort to cause their lips to swell. Instead, many found themselves bruised, swollen, and even seriously hurt.
I recently weighed in on the Kylie Jenner challenge in an interview with WRGB CBS 6 in Albany. In the report, I offer advice to parents on talking to young people about the dangers of the challenge. Also in the clip, Spa One at The Plastic Surgery Group certified makeup artist Vanessa Torres offers makeup tips to create the illusion of fuller lips.
Thankfully, the Kylie Jenner Challenge was as short as it was painful. The controversy, though, has changed course as Jenner now admits she has lip augmentation to thank for her famous feature. This has caused many people, including parents, to wonder, “How young is too young for lip injections?”
The age for plastic surgery and lip augmentation depends on a few factors, including:
- The maturity of the patient
- The support of the parents
- The type of procedure planned
While 18 years of age is a general rule of thumb for plastic surgery, there are exceptions, and procedures are considered carefully after a consultation on an individual basis.
More important than age, however, is finding a properly trained and certified plastic surgeon. For patients both young and old, safety should always be the top priority.
