Protecting yourself and your family from the flu is a top priority during this time of year. With so much concern each year about the flu and its effects, the doctors and nurses at The Plastic Surgery Group are asked frequently about the effects of the flu and the common cold on scheduled procedures, such as breast augmentation, facelift, or CoolSculpting®, and the recovery process afterward.
Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions about illnesses and scheduled procedures, as well as answers from Albany plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Rockmore:
If I have the flu right now, should I cancel my procedure? What if I just have a common cold?
If you currently have the flu or any other illness, it is best to delay your procedure until you are well. The flu or other illness can increase the possibility of a postoperative complication or make your recovery more difficult. As always, if there are any concerns, it is best to discuss your individual situation with your doctor. Your overall health is our primary concern.
If I cancel due to illness, is there a cancellation fee? How far ahead do I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
If the procedure is cancelled due to illness there is typically no cancellation fee. We at The Plastic Surgery Group care more about your health and well-being than the financial aspects of the procedure.
If someone in my family has the flu right now, can I still have my procedure done as scheduled?
If someone in your family currently has the flu but you are symptom-free, you can still proceed with your procedure. You would however want to minimize your contact with them post operatively.
If I catch the flu after my surgical procedure, will that affect my recovery time? Can I take medicine for my infection when still recovering from surgery?
If you catch the flu after your procedure it will make your recovery less pleasant. It is possible to take medications for infection while recovering, though most flus are viral and are treated without medication. As for specific medications, this is best discussed with your surgeon.
Does having plastic surgery procedures done make you more susceptible to catching the flu or common cold?
Plastic surgery does not change your susceptibility to the flu or a cold in any way.
What steps can I take to lessen my chance of catching the flu and other seasonal illnesses?
The best way to minimize your risk is to limit your exposure to affected people and wash your hands frequently. Eating a well balanced diet and getting the proper amount of sleep would also be considered helpful.
