What do you think is the most common cancer in the U.S.? Breast cancer? Lung cancer? Surprisingly, neither. The most common form of cancer in America today is actually skin cancer. In fact, one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer at some point in their lifetime.
Skin Cancer is Preventable
What’s most interesting about skin cancer is that it is preventable if the necessary precautions are taken. Since November is Healthy Skin Month, it is the perfect time to start putting more focus on protecting your body. When beginning your new regime, keep in mind that basic tips are the most essential. First, a healthy diet will lead to a happier and healthier well-being. Start eating more fruits, vegetables and leaner meats and cut down on the junk food, and it can be a tremendous help to your overall health, including your skin.
Just because it is getting colder, doesn’t mean the sun isn’t still dangerous. Actually, reflection off the snow can cause severe burns and be just as detrimental. Sun exposure causes 90% of wrinkles while aging only causes 10%! Plus, the primary cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun. Sunscreen shouldn’t be restricted to only your beach bag. Year-round application is the first defense. If you are heading outside to shovel, apply to any exposed areas.
Recommended Skin Care Products
Also, if you plan to spend time in dry climates while skiing, snowboarding or hiking, make sure you rehydrate your skin. Skin Ceutical’s Retexturing Activator™ is like flooding your skin with water and vitamins! Moisturizer on top will lock in moisture all day long! Transitioning from hot to cold and artificial heat in your home also takes a toll on your skin. Use natural lotions as often as possible. Zinc Oxide is an essential ingredient in your SPF/moisturizer. One specific product we recommend is Obagi’s Sunshield 50™ which is thin, light-weight and paraben and paba-free.
“Too many people suffer from skin ailments today,” said one of our in-house estheticians. “Just like regulating a healthy weight, it takes effort to maintain a healthy complexion. Stress levels, sun exposure and unhealthy foods are only a few of the factors that can affect your body. We love treating patients to improve their skin, but more importantly, we enjoy educating them so they can begin taking preventative steps for a healthier future.”
