3 Ways to Use Liposuction in a Mommy Makeover

Liposuction helps Albany patients return to their "pre-baby" bodies as part of a mommy makeover.

Mommy makeover patients usually already know that it combines cosmetic breast surgery with a tummy tuck, addressing 2 areas most directly affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding. Many are surprised, though, to learn that liposuction plays an important role at our Albany practice. When women from Syracuse and other upstate areas travel to see us for a mommy makeover, they want all their cosmetic goals met in a single operation.

The most common way to use liposuction as part of a mommy makeover is to further sculpt the abdomen. A tummy tuck repairs abdominal muscles that are stretched and separated during pregnancy and removes excess skin that has lost its elasticity. Pockets of fat, however, may remain, which is why we use liposuction to complete the slimmer look. One of the common questions we hear from patients is whether a tummy tuck or liposuction would work better for them. The answer is often both, especially for mommy makeover patients.

Liposuction can also be a smart choice for other areas of the body:

  • Hips and thighs: Liposuction is an excellent procedure to remove fat from the thighs and hips, as well as the love handles. The hips of a woman who has had children will generally remain wider than a woman who hasn’t been pregnant because of the physiological changes that occur from pregnancy.
  • Neck: Some women notice that the weight they gain during pregnancy shows up in their necks. Liposuction gives patients a trimmer neck, especially if the skin is in good condition. Skin that has lost its elasticity may require a neck lift for the best results.

Consultations are the ideal time for a patient and surgeon to discuss the possible procedures that can be combined during a mommy makeover and what areas to target.
