What Causes a Double Chin, Anyway?

Learn about KYBELLA, a nonsurgical double chin treatment at our Albany, NY practice.

Recently, The Plastic Surgery Group became one of the first practices in the Capital Region and Upstate New York to introduce the new FDA-approved treatment for submental fullness, also known as a “double chin.” I’m thrilled to announce that each of our board-certified plastic surgeons is now trained and qualified to treat patients with KYBELLA™ right here in Albany, NY, as an alternative to liposuction.

KYBELLA is an injectable treatment that eliminates the fat beneath your chin. Its active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in our bodies and helps us break down and absorb dietary fat. With each KYBELLA injection, fat cells beneath the chin are destroyed. Patients see improvement in just 2 to 4 sessions, spaced about a month apart.

Many people have submental fullness. In fact, in a 2014 survey by the folks at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), 68% of respondents said fullness under their chin bothers them just as much as lines and wrinkles that form around the eyes as we age.

But what causes a double chin? Here are 3 answers:

  1. Genetics: If you struggle with submental fullness, you may have genetics to blame. Unfortunately, it can just run in the family! I’ve seen both thin and muscular people who have double chins. Until now, there wasn’t much you could do without liposuction surgery.
  2. Weight Gain: We all carry fat differently and in different places. A double chin is one of those “trouble spots” for many people, and especially for those who are overweight. When we lose weight, the problem can get better, but it doesn’t always go away.
  3. Aging: This is one of the aging bummers that can blindside you. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and our muscles weaken. These conditions can make a double chin appear more pronounced.

Many people who visit my practice would like to reduce a double chin but don’t necessarily want to have surgery such as liposuction. At many practices (including ours), it’s also more affordable than liposuction. I believe KYBELLA will be a wonderful solution for certain candidates, and my colleagues and I are honored to be one of a select group of trained physicians throughout the country to transform lives with this treatment.
