Case 1213, Breast Augmentation

Surgeon: Steven Lynch, MD

* This is a 34 year old mother of two who presents with so many very attractive areas of her body but her breasts just did not fit her body image.  She desired to increase the size of her breasts from her present A cup.  After reviewing many pictures and taking her compressed volume into consideration, then 525 cc saline moderate plus implants were chosen.  They were placed under the muscle with an IM incision (at the breast crease).  The patient is seen at 4 months post op and really has a very nice result.  Very happy patient and very happy doctor.  Confidence is beautiful !!

*Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

Case 1006, Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift

Surgeon: Douglas Hargrave, MD

* This 37-year-old woman was unhappy with the current shape of her breasts. She has had 5 children and lost 50 lbs. Procedure: Breast Lift with Augmentation Mastopexy (implants) using 450 cc high profile silicone implants.

*Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

Case 1247, Breast Augmentation

Surgeon: Jeffrey Rockmore, MD

* This patient was extremely unsatisfied with her breast size and was seeking a more permanent solution to help her achieve her aesthetic goals, rather than just wearing a padded bra. She wished to increase her breast size from an A cup to a C cup so we decided to use 330 cc moderate profile silicone implants.  The moderate profile implants were used for her since she wanted to look as conservative as possible.  These had sufficient width to narrow the space between her breasts and create nice cleavage.  The patient is shown 3 months after her augmantation and is extremely happy with the results.

*Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

Case 948, Breast Augmentation

Surgeon: Susan Gannon, MD

* 19 year old female who underwent breast augmentation. A 325 cc saline implant filled to 350 cc was used.

*Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

Will breast augmentation leave scars?

As with all surgical procedures we perform in Albany, breast augmentation results in some degree of scarring. Closely following your doctor's post-op instruction will significantly minimize the appearance of scars.

Depending on your body and preferences, breast augmentation incisions can be made in the armpit, around the areola, or along the crease where the breast meets the chest. Each incision placement comes with its own risks and benefits, and your surgeon will help you decide which is best for you.

Will breast augmentation take care of sagging?

Women with slight sagging may attain the improved shape they want with breast augmentation alone as breast implants may fill out the stretched skin. Most women who want to enhance their breast size and shape require breast augmentation combined with a breast lift. If your nipples point downward or are positioned below the breast crease, it's likely you need a breast lift.

How much time will I need off after my breast augmentation?

Fatigue and discomfort are common following breast augmentation surgery, and you may need help around the house for the first 48 hours or so. Most patients feel well enough to return to work within a week, provided their jobs are not physically demanding.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The cost for breast augmentation depends on many factors including your choice of implants, the complexity of the procedure, and whether it will be combined with other procedures. The range for breast augmentation is typically $6,000 to $7,000. We offer patient financing to help most patients afford to pursue their desired improvements. For the best possible surgical outcome, it's important to consider your surgeon's credentials above cost. Visit Meet the Surgeons to learn more about our exceptional team.

What should I look for when choosing a breast surgeon?

There is no shortage of qualified breast surgeons in and around Albany, New York, so selecting the one who's right for you can be a challenge. We encourage prospective patients to choose surgeons who are board-certified in plastic surgery. Board certification in a particular field indicates that that doctor has successfully passed rigorous exams in that field, demonstrating a deep level of practical knowledge. It's also a good idea to browse his or her before-and-after photos to get a good sense of the type of results he or she can create. Finally, when you visit a surgeon for a consultation, you should feel comfortable and unrushed. He or she should address all of your questions and concerns completely, and his or her staff should be friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and organized. Plastic surgery is a significant personal decision; you should feel comfortable and confident every step of the way.

Will I be able to breastfeed after my breast augmentation?

The location of the incisions and the implants' placement will usually determine whether you'll be able to breastfeed. If the incision does not affect the nipple, there is a higher likelihood that you'll be able to breastfeed in the future.

The quality of breast milk is not affected by the presence of breast implants. However, patients should tell their doctors if they plan to breastfeed after their surgery.

What are the possible risks and complications?

While complications can arise during any surgical procedure, the rates associated with breast augmentation procedures are extremely low. You surgeon will discuss all of your concerns and possible complications as part of your consultation. Common complications include:

  • Capsular contracture: This condition involves tightening of the scar or capsule around the implant, which makes the breast feel hard. Removing the scar tissue and, in some cases, replacing the implant, are 2 of the ways capsular contracture can be treated.
  • Infection: There is a small chance that an infection may occur around the area of the implant. In these rare cases, the implant might have to be taken out for a few months. A new implant will be placed once the infection is gone.
  • Impact to nipple sensation: In some cases of breast augmentation surgery, women can experience sensations of hypersensitive nipples or a loss of sensitivity or slight numbness of their nipples around the area where the incisions were made. In most cases, these symptoms disappear over time.
  • Implant leak/rupture: In the event of a breast implant breaking or leaking, saline implants will lose their contents over a short period of time, usually a couple of hours, and the body will naturally absorb the saltwater. In the case of gel-filled implants, there may not be any noticeable change if the scar capsule surrounding the implant does not break. In most cases, these situations will be corrected through another breast augmentation operation to replace the implants.
