The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Our plastic surgeons typically perform breast augmentation surgery at a nearby outpatient surgical center using general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The procedure generally takes about an hour, and patients return home the same day with assistance from a responsible adult.

Incision placement is customized to each patient and may be located along the breast fold (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), or within the underarm area (transaxillary). After the surgeon makes the incision, she creates a pocket for the implant either beneath the chest muscle (submuscular) or directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular). Submuscular placement is often recommended for women with less natural breast tissue because it contributes to a softer, more natural-looking result.

Once the implants are positioned, the incisions are carefully closed with sutures.

The Recovery Process

Most patients are able to return to work within about a week after breast augmentation surgery. During the first few days of recovery, it is normal to experience soreness, swelling, and fatigue. Your breast surgeon may prescribe medication to help manage discomfort, and patients should focus on rest while avoiding strenuous activity.

Within the first one to two weeks, patients typically transition from gauze dressings into a surgical bra and gradually resume light daily activities. Physical exercise, upper-body strain, and heavy lifting should still be avoided during this portion of recovery.
